GARMA 2019 TO MAP OUT A PATHWAY TO THE FUTURE

8 February 2019

The 2019 Garma Festival will focus on building a better future for Aboriginal people, the Yothu Yindi Foundation said today.

YYF chair Galarrwuy Yunupingu AM said the official theme for the 21st annual Garma will be: ‘Garma’lili manapanmirri dhukarryarrany’dhun gu[arr’wu’, which means ‘Pathways to our future’ in Yolngu Matha.

“Each year at Garma, we see the strength of traditional Yolngu law and culture in northeast Arnhem Land,” Dr Yunupingu said.

“But while our relationship to the land remains strong, and we remain resilient, our relationship with the rest of the nation is unresolved.

“We haven’t finished settling the differences of our nation’s past, and until we do that, we cannot build a proper foundation for the future.”

Garma 2019 will take place between 2-5 August at Gulkula, near the township of Gove in the Northern Territory. More than 2500 people are expected to attend.

YYF CEO Denise Bowden said the theme would resonate at this year’s Key Forum policy discussions.

“This is a theme that cuts across the Key Forum agenda, whether we’re talking about health, economic development, education or employment,” Mrs Bowden said.

“It also ties in with our Youth Forum activities, and that’s the generation we’re talking about - the pathway to their future.

“Yolngu kids deserve the same life opportunities and level of wellbeing as other Australian youth; that’s our mission and has always been our top priority.”
