ABC BACK ON BOARD FOR GARMA 2019

4 June 2019

The Yothu Yindi Foundation (YYF) is pleased to announce the continuation of its media partnership
with the ABC for Garma 2019, which will see the national broadcaster provide comprehensive coverage of this year’s event across all its platforms.
YYF CEO Denise Bowden welcomed the ABC’s commitment to covering Indigenous issues, and
said it played an important role amplifying the Garma conversation to a national audience.
“It’s never been more important to elevate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices in the media,”
Mrs Bowden said.
“Since its inception, YYF has consistently championed the aspirations of Yolngu people and their
right to the same life opportunities as non-Indigenous Australians.
“People living in remote communities, in particular, can feel disempowered and removed from the
political and policy decisions which shape their lives, so we welcome the ABC’s commitment in this
space.
“Last year, in addition to its Garma coverage, the ABC helped fulfil a long-held ambition of the YYF
to deliver media training to our Youth Forum participants, and we’re delighted they will be involved
in the Youth Forum again this year.”
It is anticipated that The Drum, Behind the News, and RN Drive will all return to Gulkula this year,
with extensive news coverage and specialist reporting across all ABC platforms.
ABC Managing Director David Anderson said: “The ABC is committed to supporting Garma 2019
because it brings Indigenous Australians together and helps focus the nation’s attention on issues
most relevant to Indigenous communities.
“Garma is an important celebration of Indigenous culture and conversations and the ABC is honoured to play a role in ensuring its success.”
This year’s Garma will take place from 2-5 August. The official theme is ‘Garma’lili manapanmirri
dhukarryarrany’dhun gudarr’wu’, which means ‘Pathways to our future’ in Yolngu Matha.
