GARMA 2021 LOOKS AHEAD TOWARD THE FUTURE

14 May 2021

Garma 2021 will ‘look ahead toward the future’ as the Yothu Yindi Foundation delivers on its commit ment to create an education hub in northeast Arnhem Land.

YYF CEO and Garma Festival Director Denise Bowden said the theme for the 22nd annual Garma would be ‘Nhanga Ngathilyurra’, a Yolngu phrase which means to ‘look ahead’, or ‘look toward the future’.

“The theme for this year’s event encapsulates the exciting work being done on the ground to offer better educational pathways for Yolngu across the life cycle, from kinder right through to university,” Mrs Bowden said.

“We reached a major milestone on this journey last month with the opening of the Dhupuma Barker junior school in Gunyangara, the result of a partnership between Barker College and the Foundation.

“It was the realisation of a long-held ambition by community leaders for locally-owned and locally-run education, one that combines Yolngu learning with the broader curriculum.

“At the same time, we continue to advance work with Studio Schools Australia and the University of Melbourne for the secondary and tertiary components of the project, and we look forward to updating guests about the significant progress that’s been made bringing them to life.”

Mrs Bowden said the plan for an education hub in the region had been inspired by the success of the old Dhupuma College in the 1970’s, which counts many of today’s community leaders among its alumni.

“Education has always been at the heart of our work, and this is an ongoing investment in the future of the next generation, ensuring they have the educational grounding necessary to realise their po tential and thrive in both worlds.”

The 22nd annual Garma will take place from Friday 30 July – Monday 2 August, 2021, at Gulkula, on the Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory.

Reduced capacity for this year’s event due to COVID means tickets are now sold out, although com munity passes for local residents are still available.
