YOLNGU HEROES TO BE HONOURED AT GARMA

Tuesday, 8 July, 2014

A special group of men and women will be honoured as Yolngu Heroes at Garma 2014, the
Yothu Yindu Foundation said today.
CEO Denise Bowden said the awards ceremony was a great way of celebrating the
achievements of local role models, mentors, community leaders and other inspiring
individuals.
“The Yolngu Heroes recognises those people making a lasting and positive difference to
community life,” she said.
“Their names aren't always the ones in the limelight; often they are the people working
behind the scenes, setting the right example, leading the right way.”
In previous years, teachers, social workers, youth leaders and artists have been among
those honoured as Yolngu Heroes at Garma.
“It's always a difficult choice because there are so many people doing important and
inspiring work in the community.
“Garma is a great place to showcase this work and pay tribute to the people behind it.
“It's our way of saying thank-you to the champions of the Yolngu community.”
Garma 2014 will take place in northeast Arnhem Land on 1-4 August.
The theme for this year's event is Responsibility, Reform and Recognition.
“Garma 2014 is shaping up as the very best Garma of them all,” Mrs Bowden said.
“The opening of the new Garma Knowledge Centre will be a real highlight and a wonderful
addition to the beautiful Gulkula site.
“Garma is a unique experience, and - for some of our guests – a life-changing one.
“No other event in Australia gives you front row seats to compelling discussions on
Indigenous affairs during the day, and spectacular cultural and artistic performances on the
bunggul ceremonial ground by night.”
