Media Release: 2016 Garma Youth Forum to Educate, Inspire

18 April 2016

Yothu Yindi Foundation CEO Denise Bowden said the four-day Youth Forum program was fun, informative, and a fantastic way to forge life-long friendships. “The Youth Forum really captures the essence of Garma, as we strive to bridge the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in every way,” she said. “We’re expecting more than 200 students to participate in this year’s event, with input from a diverse array of schools across Australia, from large private schools in Melbourne and Sydney to smaller remote Indigenous schools from Arnhem Land and beyond. “The Garma Youth Forum is about education, inspiration, participation and cultural exchange, and building up the skills of the next generation of leaders.” The program includes Yolngu cultural workshops, musical activities and dance, digital media, careers guidance, leadership development and a fascinating exploration of the night sky as seen through Yolngu eyes. Mrs Bowden said the students would have the opportunity to put their new skills to the test by meeting and interviewing some of the many corporate, academic, philanthropic, political and Indigenous leaders and dignitaries who come to Garma each year. “After the day’s activities and the end of the evening bunggul, students can kick up their heels on the dance floor, or participate in one of the many fireside chats taking place around the Gulkula site,” she said. Garma is a committed drug and alcohol-free event.
