YOLNGU ART SPRINGS TO LIFE AT GARMA 2022

20 July 2022

Two exciting artistic collaborations will take place at this year’s Garma alongside the spectacular  Gapan Gallery exhibition, the Yothu Yindi Foundation said today.

Two-time Archibald Prize winner Del Kathryn Barton will team up with the artists at the Yirrkala Print  Studio, while multi-disciplinary artist Damien Kamholtz returns to Garma and will be working with  celebrated local artist Dhambit Mununggurr.

YYF CEO Denise Bowden said the collaborations embodied the Garma spirit of saltwater meeting  freshwater.

“Yolngu artists are hitting new heights with their work, flourishing on the national and international  stage,” Mrs Bowden said.
“We know there’s an abundance of talent in this part of the world producing art of the highest calibre,  pushing the boundaries between traditional and contemporary styles.

“It will be exciting to see what perspectives Del Kathryn and Damien bring to their respective works.”

Curated by Buku Larrnggay, the opening of the beautiful Gapan Gallery on Friday night remains one  of the highlights of the event.

Mrs Bowden said Bula’Bula Arts, Anindilyakwa Arts, Numbulwar Numburindi Arts, Gapuwiyak Culture  and Arts, and Dhambit will also be exhibiting and selling work.

“The Gapan Gallery has always been a major drawcard at Garma, and the opening is an occasion  not to be missed.

“We’re delighted to have regional representation from Groote Eylandt, Ramingining, Gapuwiyak, and  Numbulwar at this year’s event, each bringing its own unique flavour to the Gallery, and guests can  expect to see work from new and established artists.”

The 22nd annual Garma will take place from Friday 29 July – Monday 1 August at Gulkula, on the  Gove Peninsula in the NT.

The theme for this year’s event is ‘Nhanga Ngathilyurra’, a Yolngu phrase which means to ‘look  ahead’, or ‘look toward the future’.
